*Strength
exercises
build older adult muscles and increase your metabolism, which
helps to keep your weight and blood sugar in check.
*Balance
exercises
build leg muscles, and this helps to prevent falls. According to
the NIH, U.S. hospitals have 300,000 admissions for broken hips
each year, many of them seniors, and falling is often the cause
of those fractures.
*Stretching
exercises
can give you more freedom of movement, which will allow you to
be more active during your senior years. Stretching exercises
alone will not improve your endurance or strength.
*Endurance
exercises
are any activity—walking, jogging, swimming, biking, even raking
leaves—that increase your heart rate and breathing for an
extended period of time. Build up your endurance gradually,
starting with as little as 5 minutes of endurance activities at
a time.

What exactly
is yoga? The Sanskrit word “yoga” means to yoke, to join, or to
unite. When we practice yoga, we are learning or relearning the
state of unity, harmony, and bliss in the body, mind, and the
spirit. Over thousands of years, the science of yoga has proven
itself an effective way to cultivate physical health, develop
concentration, and experience a peace of mind.
Yoga is also
a science of personal development. As you develop into the
person you are intended to be, you’ll attain unity of the mind,
body, and spirit through exercise, breathing, and meditation.
Yoga is a
way to attain a healthy body and mind. A balanced yoga practice
includes the following 5 principles that lead us toward good
health:
1.Proper relaxation
2.Proper exercise
3.Proper breathing
4.Proper diet
5.Positive thinking and
meditation
Yoga is a discipline. It is
a skilled activity, and will take time to attain competence in
any skilled activity. It takes practice, repetition, commitment,
and dedication.
Yoga leads us toward
integration. Whether the yogic technique you practice be
physical, mental, or behavioral, they will gradually bring
together the inseparable body, mind, and spirit.
Yoga is about consciously
living life to the best of one’s ability. Ultimately, yoga is
about learning to access, modify, and direct our physical and
mental faculties. It’s about taking control or our lives and
accepting responsibility for our behaviors, actions, and
reactions.
Wow! Did you think yoga was
all that? Speaking from my own humble experience in teaching and
practicing yoga, it is even more than that. It’s more than words
can describe especially if you are able to learn to relax or
even meditate. I would love to sit and tell you all the
wonderful things yoga is but, you really just need to experience
it yourself. I don’t have to prove to you it works, because it
has been on earth for more than 5,000 years, I couldn’t possibly
do it justice with my own experience to tell you of the many
benefits I’ve had. Please if you care at all about your journey
and your well-being, you’d want to at least try or retry yoga.
